Stewart Shoves USAC Official Thursday Night

Tony Stewart may have been announcing his new car with Stewart-Haas Racing Friday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but his actions Thursday night at O'Reilly Raceway Park might become a bigger story later this weekend.

Stewart, according to many online reports and at least a handful of NASCAR beat writers this morning at IMS, first knocked a radio headset off the head of a USAC (United States Auto Club) official and then shoved him during a pit road confrontation at ORP.

From the Anderson (Ind.) Herald Bulletin:
Stewart, the two-time Sprint Cup champion, owns the midget cars of Tracy Hines and Levi Jones. Hines entered Thursday's race as the points leader and was running in the top four when he brushed the outside wall on a restart on the eighth circuit

Hines' crew attempted to change a right rear flat tire and get Hines back into the race before another restart. As the crew pushed the car to the front of the straightaway, a USAC official indicated they were too late.

In Shocking Turn of Events, John Daly, One-Armed Golfer, Misses Cut in Russia

Yesterday, I brought you the heart-warming tale of John Daly, the one-armed golfer who had overcome physical limitations and personal demons to play in the Russian Open. After a rocky go of it at last week's British Open, Daly shot a respectable opening round 70 in Moscow.

But the feel-good story lasted less than 24 hours. Daly, who hasn't had his PGA Tour card since 2006, shot a second-round 73 and missed the cut by one stroke.

Other than the obvious reasons, Daly shouldn't be disheartened -- the course was clearly set up to put American golfers at a disadvantage -- none of the five players in the field will play the weekend. I mean, how often can you say that Wesley Horne, Ryan Carter, Luke List, Matt Laase (amateur) AND Daly didn't make a cut? Exactly.

It's not all bad news for Daly, though. CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman ranked Daly fourth on his Top 50 Sports Jerks list, ahead of such notable names as O.J. Simpson, Don King, Kennesaw Mountain Landis, Ron Artest, Tonya Harding and Pete Rose. So there's that.

As for Daly's future in professional golf, here's to hoping he takes David Duval's advice and hones his skillz on the Futures Tour. Or, worst case, he joins the Duke golf team -- there's an opening, you know -- and if anybody screams "Duke" more than John Daly, I have yet to meet him.

Caleb Campbell Situation a Result of Service Academy Politics?

Sports talk and message boards have been abuzz about the Army reversing their decision to let West Point graduate, Caleb Campbell play safety for the Detroit Lions. The Detroit News "Behind the Scenes" columnists contend that it was pressure from the service academies that caused this change:
The feeling at the United States Military Academy in West Point is that higherups and other branches of the service -- the Navy, in particular -- were jealous of the favorable publicity Campbell has generated for the Army since the Lions drafted him on the seventh round in April.
...
Campbell, who graduated from West Point on May 31, was eligible to play pro football under the "alternative service option" available to graduates of the service academies. The Navy and Air Force required two years of active duty before exercising the option. The Army allowed it immediately after graduation.

The Dept. of Defense has ordered the Army to comply with the policy as implemented by the Navy and Air Force.
So Navy wants to be able to keep beating Army and that's why they changed the policy? Maybe if Campbell went to the Washington Redskins instead of the Detroit Lions, maybe the Washington-based DoD people would have held off in making this policy change.

FYI, Cowboys: Justin Tuck Wants You to Know That You Can't Buy a Super Bowl

I suppose this will be a story line for the 2008 season, or at least until the Cowboys inevitably lose their first-round playoff game. In the meantime, the Giants, defending Super Bowl champions, are already tired of hearing about all preseason hype surrounding their NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

As a general rule, it's a bad idea to put any stock in preseason media predictions, but the Giants seemed pretty worked up about being slighted less than six months after cementing the Patriots' legacy as the only NFL team to go undefeated in the regular season only to lose in the Super Bowl.

And now, as training camps open across the league, the Giants are voicing their displeasure over the peculiar idea that the team is somehow underdogs in the division heading into 2008.
The Giants are a bit perturbed, not only that nobody is picking them to repeat as Super Bowl winners or even get back to the Super Bowl, but that every time they look up, somebody else is calling for the Cowboys to win the NFC East even though the Giants went into Texas Stadium in January and eliminated Dallas from the playoffs.

"Maybe it's because Dallas tried to buy a Super Bowl this year," Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said right after reporting to camp Thursday. Can you buy the Super Bowl?

"I don't think so," Tuck said.

NFL Has Stupid Video Policies, Chris Cooley Helps Blogger Get Around Them

The NFL, and especially the Redskins, have strict rules about online video, and Dan Steinberg of the DC Sports Bog has been repeatedly stymied by those rules. So Steinberg got himself an interview with Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, and he did it in a place where the NFL has no authority -- Cooley's mom's house:

Cooley, whose own blog consistently provides a great perspective on life as an NFL player, talks about his football card collection, the differences between Joe Gibbs and Jim Zorn, and how teammate Jason Fabini got his feelings hurt by one of Steinberg's colleagues. And most of all, he shows that he's a free spirit who doesn't feel constrained by the strict rules of the NFL. Good for him.

Bengals Release Kenny Irons; Waste Yet Another High Draft Pick

Usually when I am critical of the Bengals organization, three things come to mind: their lack of a real scouting department, their inability to judge character and the wasting of draft picks.

If you noticed, all three things involve how they bring in personnel.

It happened again as the Bengals released RB Kenny Irons, a second-round pick from Auburn. Yeah, this was a fluke bad pick since Irons blew out his knee in Cincy's first preseason game in 2007 and failed the team's physical ... but it adds onto the pile of high end picks that aren't with the team anymore.

The Bengals have already rid themselves of Irons (2nd round, '07), David Pollack (1st round, '05), Odell Thurman (2nd round, '05), Chris Henry (3rd round, '05), Keiwan Ratliff (2nd round, '04), Madieu Williams (2nd round, '04), Caleb Miller (3rd round, '04) and Landon Johnson (3rd round, '04). Those names add into all those previous blown picks like Peter Warrick, KiJana Carter, David Klingler, etc.

Yeah, every team has bad picks and some of those names about had devestating injuries which kept their career from getting off the ground. Still, besides the 2008 draftees ... the Bengals have none of their 2nd round picks they've ever made on this roster.

Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito HBO Video

HBO has done something really smart in promoting Saturday night's Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight on pay-per-view: It posted the full Countdown to Cotto-Margarito video on YouTube:

The fight should be a great one, and HBO's Countdown series is always excellent. HBO was smart to put this video online, and I think it will convince more than a few people to buy the pay-per-view broadcast.

I've bought the pay-per-view broadcast, and I'll be live blogging it Saturday night here at FanHouse.

Green Bay Packers Training Camp Opens This Weekend, Will Brett Favre Be There?

Green Bay Packers players are supposed to report to training camp on Saturday and conduct their first practice on Sunday. So will Brett Favre be there?

Adam Schefter of NFL Network says he will be. According to Schefter, Favre told Packers general manager Ted Thompson on Thursday that he is planning to return to report. Just before he reports, he will fax a letter seeking reinstatment to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and that's all the paperwork he needs to rescind his tearful March retirement.

After that, the Packers' choices are either cut Favre, trade Favre, or add Favre to their roster. What will they do at that point? Who knows? Some people think he'll get traded to the Bucs, other people think he'll stick with the Packers, at least at first. The only thing we know for sure is the training camp soap opera isn't going away after this weekend -- it's just getting started.

Devin Hester Ends Shortest Holdout in NFL History, Reports to Bears Training Camp

Let me take you back 24 hours, when Devin Hester, return dude extraordinaire, declared that he wasn't playing for $445,000 this season. He's worth way more than that, and until the Bears gave him a new deal, he wasn't showing up for work.

It's a popular strategy for disgruntled players looking for more money, and one that seldom works (Devin, Lance. Lance, Devin). Not so much because contract talks might stall, but because it cost Hester $30,000 in fines to hold out for two days, which, when you don't want to live on less than half a million, sorta hurts. And that probably has something to do with this:
There was a change of heart between then and now, and this puts Hester in position to compete for a starting job as a receiver. He was slated to work with the first team on Wednesday and will not be far behind now.

Teammates and coaches were understanding of his position as he's scheduled to earn $445,000 this season. General manager Jerry Angelo spoke with Hester's agent Eugene Parker on Thursday and expressed that he didn't want Hester to feel slighted that the club got a slew of contracts done and not his, that it remained a top priority for the club.
